Is it common for kelp to be there and what's the circular slightly lighter water formation below the kelp patch?

Found it! It's a little bed just off the east side of San Nicolas Island, here it is along with the massive forests of June 2005. It seems more fragile than the rest of the nearby beds, it comes and goes a lot.

It's San Nicolas island of California's Channel Islands, on 24 June 2005, captured by the amazing Landsat 5 that was operational March 1984 - January 2013. The kelp beds around this little island are among the most spectacular in the current California data set. They vary year to year and month to month, but they are frequently stunning in their size and density.
