Kelp Talk
Check out this upcoming blog post!
Kelp 😛
This is def. kelp
That is the filled in artificial reef
I think the line farther from the coast is something else.
I would just mark it clouds
Pt. Loma
Could be, hard to tell. I have been noticing a lot of kelp right on the edge of images
That is kelp 😃
Most definitely
yes!
Prob not seagrass, the reef is very thin here!
Very cool!
Clouds...
Most likely
Could be, tough to tell with the clouds
I think it may be lines of foam
Mark it as clouds
I would hold off unless it is green
Now that look like kelp harvesting!
Yes!
You'll be famous!
Good question! I am writing a blog post about this today!
If you are looking at the darker areas to the west, that is most likely kelp canopy muffling wind chop. It is not showing up green though
Yes
Wow! Yes, it is kelp out in the middle of the sea, out on the cortez bank! Good find artman40!!!
Looks like faint kelp to me
I'm guessing a shadow
hard to tell...
Also green turtle habitat http://www.portofsandiego.org/environment/natural-resources/310-endangered-eastern-pacific-green-sea-turtles.html
Yes! 😃
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaucus_atlanticus
You will have to wait for GrainyFields.org
I think so
Another tough one!
Hmmm, hard to tell with the hazy clouds
Kinda looks like it, it's the right time of year for Tas
Kelp
Most likely, very thin reef
Yep, Catalina!
Tough to see, but yes!
I can see my childhood house form here!
Probably kelp, this is the western tip of Anacapa Island
http://www.paranormalpeopleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/19cb52_ancient-aliens.jpg
There is sometimes a lot of kelp on the west side of the island
These dark images are tough, we are fixing them!
South Coronado Is. Good find, I don't usually see kelp there, but that is kelp! Lots of fish aquaculture on the east side now
Off to the far left side of the image, yes.
Could be, interesting!
Most likely sediment coming from the river mouth 😃
Prob intertidal algae. On the google earth image it shows lots of exposed rock, when the tide is low those areas are prob covered with algae
Hard to say, are you looking at the darker regions of water?
Good eye artman40! Those are an experimental artificial reef constructed by scientists as mitigation for the San Onofre nuclear power plant.
Probably intertidal algae on rocks
That is cool!
Could be some type of intertidal algae. There are a few types of large algae growing here.
Probably not. This is near Ventura CA, not much rocky reef there.
Probably not. This is the east side of San Clemente island. In my experience there is not much kelp there.
This is cool, prob some type of bloom.
Most likely some faint clouds or sediment
Yes, seagrass
My hometown 😃
I see a little bit of kelp in the lower left. This is Catalina Island.
Looks like it, this would be hard to classify.
Pt. Loma kelp forest. One of the largest in the world.
I think it is all seagrass or other benthic algae.
Yes.
That is definitely kelp.
If you are talking about the green right on the coast, it is probably some intertidal algae.
Seagrass in the south of the image, maybe kelp in the north.
Looks like very faint kelp, it would be hard to mark.
Could be a cloud shadow.
Yes, there are seagrass beds at the top of Tomales Bay
Most likely.
This is not kelp, could be sediment or a thick phytoplankton bloom.
In the Google images you are looking at true color, so the kelp will appear brownish, in these are false color, so kelp looks bright green.
Most likely some intertidal algae on rocks, not giant kelp
That is some kind of algal bloom in Clear Lake, not giant kelp
An airstrip near Albion, CA
Those are mountains with snow 😃
That is kelp
Those are seagrass beds in Tomales Bay
I think its a mud/sand island offshore
That looks like kelp, but this is a very cloudy image.
Not kelp
Yes, that is kelp 😃
From the Google Earth image, I see some waves breaking there. That means this could be waves, or kelp growing on a reef... I would mark it
Probably seagrass or marsh grass in Drakes Estero, good eye
Intertidal rocks
Here is a recent paper my colleague published on these seagrasses, http://dx.doi.org/10.1890/13-1846.1
Seagrass on mudfalts in Tomales Bay near Pt. Reyes
From the Google Earth image, these look like intertidal rocks
That is Clear Lake, so prob some algal bloom, not kelp.
Not kelp, that's for sure, these are inland waters. Prob river algae.
Should be Jan 17 2001
Yes, that is kelp, but it is too obstructed by clouds!
Looks like a very faint green blob in the top of the image, I would mark it as kelp.
This look like the Delta region of central CA, there will be no kelp here as it is way too far inland. Kelp will only grow along the coast.
That is most likely sediment being stirred up off the coast or discharge from the Gualala River.
Yes, that is kelp, a lot of clouds though.
That is a Landsat error.
There is also quite a bit of interannual variability.
That is probably true. Just remember that kelp is ephemeral and can be ripped out by waves and grow back over the course of a few months.
That is kelp. Looks like the Pleasure Pt. kelp forest to the right and kelp by Steamers on the left.
Giant kelp will appear as green blobs, take at look at the discussion boards for more examples.
Those are ponds at the base of SF Bay. Giant kelp only grows along the coast. Check out the Google Earth link to see where you are.
Check out my blog post on this subject next week!
Not kelp, probably some king of algae. You are beating me to these mistyfriday!
Look out for my blog post coming next week on this subject!
Those look like small strips of land to me. Kelp would not grow here, this looks like it is far inland in SF bay.
😃
but you are right, it does look like that!
Crystal Springs Reservoir
Landsat error
It's an island. The google link is nice, but I like to copy and paste the coordinates and it will show you the center of this image.
Black Pyramid Island
That is kelp. This represents the southern edge of a single landsat image.
Kelp would have to be very close to shore in almost all circumstances. These dots away from shore should be ignored.
I don't think that is kelp. I looked on google earth and there are large sand/mud flats here. Probably some type of low algae or sea grass.
Not kelp., this looks like Richmond Harbor, kelp does not grow here.
I took a look at Google Maps and it seems like there is a lot of shallow sand/mud flats here. This most likely not giant kelp.
Those look like waves to me.
That is a big one! You can get a good view of this forest from the cliffs in Andrew Molera State Park if you are ever there!
Yes, there are many islands and complex peninsulas in the south coast of Tasmania.
Lots of kelp on the south side of San Nicolas Island!
Kelp forests off the world famous Pebble Beach and Spyglass golf courses!
La Jolla, CA. One of my sampling sites!
Kelp off the Monterey Peninsula
Check out this upcoming blog post!
